How to Clean a Stone Essential Oil Diffuser (Step by Step)

Stone Essential Oil Diffusers and how to clean your diffuser

So you've bought a beautiful new diffuser and are loving your new ritual of diffusing essential oils in your space. It smells amazing. You feel amazing. But maybe you've been a little too busy to give it a proper clean? No judgement here.

Appellation's stone essential oil diffusers are beautiful and functional, but just like any device, they need some occasional love and attention.

Why it's important to clean your essential oil diffuser

Regular cleaning is essential to maintain performance, prevent residue build-up, and ensure your essential oils are dispersed efficiently into the air. Proper maintenance not only protects your diffuser, but also ensures you experience the full aromatic and therapeutic benefits of your oils.

WHY IT MATTERS

01 Prevent mould and mildew from forming inside the water reservoir

02 Remove essential oil residue that can affect performance

03 Maintain optimal ultrasonic mist output

04 Prevent scent contamination between different oils

05 Extend the lifespan of your diffuser

A clean diffuser means a clean mist — regular care keeps the scent true and the ritual relaxing.

If you diffuse daily, especially without emptying the water reservoir after each use, aim to clean your diffuser at least once a week.

WE RECOMMEND

01 A light clean once a week

02 A more thorough clean in between scent changes and after diffusing any of Appellation's resin-based essential oils and blends, such as Omani Frankincense, The Quietude and The Tranquilist.

Oils that require more frequent cleaning

You might have noticed that certain essential oils, like myrrh or Desert Rosewood can also be troublesome, leaving a sticky residue and even hardening around the bottle lid as they oxidise. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about. It is still possible to diffuse these stunningly scented oils, so long as you take care to clean regularly between diffusions.

It's also best to clean after diffusing an intensely aromatic oil, like patchouli (found in both The Salutation and The Night Journey), as its scent tends to linger a little longer than a citrus essential oil, for example.

How to clean an ultrasonic stone diffuser – step-by-step

To give your Appellation diffuser the gentle clean it deserves, all you need is a soft cloth, some Q-tips (cotton buds), plain vinegar, some mild dishwashing liquid (or for an intensive clean, an alcohol-based cleaner, such as isopropyl or ethyl alcohol) and follow these simple steps:

01

Disconnect and disassemble

Disconnect the power supply and remove the cover and reservoir lid.

02

Clean the reservoir

Mix a teaspoon of white vinegar mixed with some water and some mild dishwashing liquid. Gently swirl inside the reservoir, wipe with a soft cloth, then rinse thoroughly.
When pouring out water, avoid allowing liquid to enter the air valve on the side. You can place a finger over the valve as a precaution.

03

Optional internal rinse cycle

For a deeper clean, run the diffuser for 20 minutes using only water and a teaspoon of vinegar. Empty and rinse afterwards.

04

Remove sticky oil residue

If the reservoir still feels oily:

  • Add 1 teaspoon undiluted isopropyl or ethyl alcohol (hand sanitiser can also work).
  • Allow it to sit for a few minutes.
  • Use a cotton bud or soft cloth dipped in alcohol to gently wipe away residue.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Alcohol effectively dissolves hardened essential oil build-up.
05

Clean the ultrasonic plate

The ultrasonic plate is the small circular indent inside the reservoir. Residue build-up here can reduce mist output.

  • Use a cotton bud dipped in vinegar or rubbing alcohol
  • Gently wipe the plate. Be very gentle – this component is delicate
  • Rinse carefully and allow to air dry.
06

Clean the stone cover

As for the stone shell cover, use a lint-free cloth to wipe away dust. If it needs a more thorough clean, give it a bath in hot soapy water, then pat dry with a soft lint-free towel.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my stone diffuser?

To keep your diffuser performing at its best, we recommend cleaning it regularly to prevent residue build-up and maintain an even mist. If you diffuse daily, give it a light clean once a week, with a more thorough clean between scent changes or after diffusing resin-based oils such as Omani Frankincense, The Quietude or The Tranquilist.

How can I tell if my diffuser needs a clean?

You know it's time to clean your diffuser if you notice any of the following:

  • A weak or uneven mist
  • A musty smell
  • A sticky film, oily feel or white marks
How can I make the scent stronger?

Because every oil is slightly different, a little experimentation is often the best way to find the right balance for your room and preferences. Try these simple adjustments:

  • use a little less water
  • increase the number of drops
  • move the diffuser to a more central position
  • avoid placing it near strong airflow or air conditioning
  • use two diffusers in larger spaces

Can I replace a part of my diffuser if something happens to it?

In many cases, yes – we may be able to help with replacement parts or repairs.

We know that accidents happen. That's why we have diffuser bases and ceramic shells on hand.

We also offer a repair service through our Dubai headquarters for certain issues.

If your diffuser is not working as it should, please contact us with a few details and, if possible, photos or video, and we will do our best to guide you towards the best next step.

Please note that repairs and replacement parts are subject to availability, and support may vary depending on your location.

Why has my diffuser stopped working?

Most diffuser faults we see tend to arise in one of two ways – either the diffuser has been knocked over, which can affect the internal wiring, or the ultrasonic plate has become worn over time.

The ultrasonic plate is the delicate circular component at the centre of the reservoir. It vibrates at high speed to disperse the water and essential oil blend. Because it is a sensitive working part, it can be affected by unsuitable substances or improper care.

To help protect your diffuser, we recommend using only 100% essential oils. Fragrance oils, perfume oils, abrasive detergents, and harsh cleaning products may damage the ultrasonic plate or other internal components. Regular cleaning is also important to maintain optimal performance.

As with any powered device, faults can occasionally occur over time, even with proper care.

Where possible, we may still be able to assist with repairs, replacement ultrasonic plates, diffuser bases, or ceramic shells, subject to availability. We also offer a repair service through our Dubai headquarters.

Which oils leave a sticky residue on a diffuser?

Resinous oils like myrrh and Desert Rosewood can leave a sticky film, and even harden around the bottle lid as they oxidise. That's completely normal. For stubborn residue, leave a teaspoon of isopropyl or ethyl alcohol in the reservoir for a few minutes, wipe with a cotton bud, then rinse well.

Should I empty my diffuser after each use?

It's a good habit. Water left sitting in the reservoir can lead to mould and mildew, and if you don't empty it, clean at least once a week.

Why is my diffuser mist weak?

Check the ultrasonic plate first. It's the small circular dip inside the reservoir, and oil residue there can reduce the mist. Wipe it very gently with a cotton bud dipped in vinegar or rubbing alcohol, then rinse and air dry. It's delicate, so go softly.

How do I clean an ultrasonic stone diffuser?

Unplug it, then swirl a teaspoon of white vinegar, some water and a little mild washing-up liquid around the reservoir. Wipe with a soft cloth, rinse well and let it air dry. Keep water out of the air valve on the side: a finger over it while you pour does the trick.

Where should I put my diffuser?

At your bedside, on a sideboard, at your desk, or on a shelf – the choice is yours. We recommend placing your diffuser on a stable, flat surface, away from carpet and curtains, and well out of reach of children and pets to help avoid accidents.

For best scent dispersal, position it somewhere open and central, rather than tucked into a corner or placed directly against a wall. It is also best kept away from direct airflow such as air conditioning vents, open windows, or fans, as strong air movement can dilute the aroma quite quickly. This allows the mist and scent to disperse more evenly throughout the room.

In larger spaces, it is often best to place the diffuser closer to the area where you spend the most time, rather than expecting one compact diffuser to scent the entire room. If your space is especially open-plan or has high ceilings, using two diffusers in different areas may give a better result.
