Meet the founders

Appellation co-founder Michelle Wranik-Hicks grew up immersed in nature – the heritage-listed bushland surrounding her childhood home perfumed by eucalypts and mimosa. She became drawn to fragrance during her career as a travel writer and editor, and while living in the Gulf, fell in love with Omani frankincense, agarwood, and the Arab tradition of scenting spaces.

Her fascination with scent deepened in 2018, when she studied perfumery in Italy under the acclaimed natural perfumer AbdesSalaam Attar. In 2020, Michelle and her husband, co-founder Michal Hicks, launched Appellation.

Appellation inspiration

It was 20th-century writer Marcel Proust who coined the term “involuntary memory”, the sensory déjà vu of a childhood memory triggered by a certain aroma.

Our name is drawn from this experience – the recollection of scent memories. It derives from the French verb “appeler”, “to call (by a name)”, and the Latin “appellare”, which means “to summon”.
