This study examined how inhaling different fragrances affects the sympathetic nervous system in adults. Researchers used blood pressure analysis and measured blood chemicals to assess changes. They found that inhaling essential oils like pepper, estragon, fennel, or grapefruit increased sympathetic activity by 1.5 to 2.5 times compared to an odorless solvent. Conversely, rose and patchouli oils reduced sympathetic activity by 40%. Pepper oil also raised adrenaline levels, while rose oil lowered them. These findings suggest that different essential oils can either stimulate or relax the sympathetic nervous system.
