Appellation is a niche wellbeing and fragrance brand that fuses scent, wellness and science.
Using natural, science-backed ingredients, we create therapeutic scents with functional benefits, helping you feel calm and balanced, so you can focus on the things that matter.
Scent as self-care
The world is a stressful place. Scent is a simple way to feel better.
Applying the principles of aromachology (the use of aroma to influence mood and emotion) we design scents that provide you with a greater sense of wellbeing.
Best of all, we do it the natural way. No synthetics, phthalates, or petroleum-derived ingredients.
Scent Wellness
Our stone essential oil diffusers and therapeutic blends help to create more moments of wellness in your day.
The science of scent
Stress. Burnout. Fatigue. Brain fog. Whatever your concern, scent is one of the fastest ways to alter your mood.
That’s because your sense of smell is directly linked with the amygdala, the emotional centre of the brain.
Simply by inhalation, aroma molecules are transmitted to the brain where they trigger neural activity.
You’re not just smelling a beautiful scent. Your body is releasing feel-good neurochemicals, naturally.
"At a time when everyone is searching for balance and wellbeing, improved focus or energy, there is no tool more powerful than scent."
Founder story
Perfumer and aromatherapist Michelle Wranik-Hicks studied perfumery in Italy under celebrated natural perfumer, Abdes Salaam Attar. The experience changed everything, sparking a fascination with essential oils and the science behind scent.
Today, in between perfumery practice and aromatherapy studies, Michelle and co-founder Michal Hicks dedicate their time to growing Appellation, experimental botanical chemistry, and exploring science-backed wellness practices from around the world.
Our responsibility
At Appellation, we take our social, environmental and organisational responsibility seriously.
We carefully select all-natural ingredients from producers who care as much about quality as you do.
Appellation inspiration
It was 20th-century writer Marcel Proust who coined the term “involuntary memory”, the sensory déjà vu of a childhood memory triggered by a certain aroma.
Our name is drawn from this experience – the recollection of scent memories. It derives from the French verb “appeler”, “to call (by a name)”, and the Latin “appellare”, which means “to summon”.
